Giant Card Tutorial

Hey, everyone! So this week I discovered a new product at Joann Fabric (I promise, I really wasn’t looking… It just happened.) DCWV is a paper company and they have some really great stuff, and they have a new product out: 11×17 inch cardstock paper pads! They have solid, patterned, and foiled papers- exciting stuff to a paper nerd! So immediately I began plotting an oversized card. After a few ideas I came up with this lovely:

This is a tutorial for those of you who use die cutting machines, but this basic idea can be modified easily and in so many ways for those of you who are old fashioned crafting to make awesome giant cards!

So to do this you need one sheet of 11×17″ DCWV solid paper. (This is double sided so the inside is bright blue!) I used my Silhouette Cameo for this cut-out card.

I placed the paper on my 12×12 cutting mat, which left the extra 5 inches or so hanging off the end, which is fine, since this will be the back of the card. We won’t do any cutting on the back of the card.

I perforated where the center of the card would be (8 1/2 inches down from the top of the paper). To do this just make a straight line with the line tool and change the line cutting style to perforated.

Next create the text or shapes you want to cut out of the front of the card. Make sure you center and orient it correctly in the       8 1/2″ x 11″ space between the top of the paper and the perforated line at the 8 1/2″ mark.

Now go ahead and do the cutting. (Keep the weeded out insides of the letters to glue on the card later so the letters don’t look funny!!) You fold it at the perforated line and you’re almost done.

Open the card and on the inner left side of the card (where your cut out image is), glue whatever color sheet of 8 1/2 x 11″ cardstock coordinates with your card. See my picture- I used bright green. Then you are finished!

Finding an envelope to mail this is probably pretty difficult, but you could mail it in a letter size Manila envelope! I did create an envelope to go with this but it needs a few tweaks. I’ll work on it and maybe share the file with you later this week as the freebie.

I would love to see your take on this if you make an oversized card!!!

Enjoy!

Glitter Birdhouse Kids’ Activity

Why would you need a glitter birdhouse? I think the better question is why would you NOT need a glitter birdhouse?

Ok, so my daughter and I came up with this lovely fun craft idea! We got the small birdhouse on sale at michaels for $0.30! They are normally $1 to begin with so this is a very inexpensive activity.

You will need:

  • White Elmer’s Glue (or other brand)
  • Paint brush
  • Birdhouse
  • Glitter

This is super simple! Your house will be a glitter mess, so contain it to the dining room table or somewhere easy to clean up.

Have your little one paint part of the birdhouse with a light layer of glue. We did the roof first. Then shake glitter all over it. (We did it over a piece of copy paper so that we could funnel it back into the glitter jar when we were done.) Repeat process with each part of the house and a different color of glitter until you have achieved the results you want.

Ours didn’t turn out perfect, but four year olds don’t want perfect- they want to play with glitter!

Beautiful!
Enjoy and have a glittertastic time!

Best Tools of the Crafting Trade

Hey, y’all! Today instead of a crafting tutorial, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite tools of the crafting trade. I have trialed and errored (Yes, I know you aren’t supposed to say it like that.) my way through sooooooo many products. So today, I’m going to share the best ones with you to save you some money, time, and heartache.

1. Recollections Cardstock (found at Michael’s Craft Store)

I have tried all the brands sold in craft stores and can say with confidence this is the best. 65 lb cardstocks do not all feel or weigh the same. This is true, folks! This products sells for $4.99 for 50 sheets, which is pretty hefty in my opinion. But I have never paid that much for it. Often they have 3 for $10 sales or even better 5 for $10. I wait for that one and stock up as much as I can until the next sale, as I use the same colors repetitively.

HOWEVER, if you are buying white cardstock, the best choice and value is Georgia-Pacific Premium Card Stock Paper 110 lb. sold at Walmart. It is $5.46 or something like that and comes with 150 sheets. WONDERFUL STUFF!

2. Scotch Advanced Tape Glider and Refills

Seriously the best adhesive ever made for crafting. Doesn’t run, is accurate, is the best deal for the money (I have checked, trust me) and is so strong. It is an expensive initial buy as it retails for about $45, but use a mobile craft store coupon and get 50% off so it won’t hurt so bad. Whenever I buy refills (2 pack for $10) I also use a couponScotch Tape

3. Pop dots

I use these on the regular and turns out I have never used a bad pop dot in my life and have used a few brands, so fear not and pick whichever one is cheaper. The Walmart ones work great, btw.

4. HP Photosmart Printer

I have had several different versions throughout my crafting life and these are wonderful and you can get a less new model for a very reasonable price. The most expensive thing is ink and it is worth it for how durable these printers are.

5. Silhouette Cameo

I could not would not want to live without my Silhouette Cameo. It is amazing! If you are a Silhouette user, you already know this, but for those of you who aren’t, I will share a post tomorrow that shows some of the different things you can do with it. The possibilities are endless!

I was not paid to say any of this, so know I speak the truth.

What’s New In The Cate Crafts Etsy Shop

Hey, everyone! So this week, I added lots of new burlap prints to the Cate Crafts Etsy Shop. (It is SOOOO long overdue!) I have been filling online orders (which have picked up!) and spending time with out of town family without giving much thought to new product. But they are here, they are great, and I hope you love them!

I am excited to introduce white burlap to my Etsy shop this week as well. It really turns out beautifully and gives a more modern feel to the burlap. It almost looks like needlepoint, some say. Look at these beauties:
